Clinical Studies

To explore and discover – Smartfish has an extensive clinical study program. This means that ideas and new product solutions are being tested. Do they work? How do they work? Are they safe? Can we document that the new Smartfish drink for children stimulates brain development? And how? Studies are carried out by leading scientists in Norway, Germany and the USA.

Smarfish is at the technological forefront in development of new nutrition products. Our clinical research programme therefore receives considerable public funding. This makes us proud, and even more committed to create products and solutions that really improve peoples health.

Documented health benefits of Smartfish formulations

The Cell Trial

- Finalised in March 2009

Title:

Effect of Smartfish and other commercial marine oil products on lipid peroxidation in U937 cells.

Test facility

University of Oslo, Dep of Nutrition.

Scientists

Dr Harald Carlsen and Dr Fred Haugen.

Results

Fish oil from three commercially available encapsulated products, placebo mixture, and Smartfish was incubated in human cells. A key finding was that the lipid peroxidation in the cell-membrane increased significantly with the three oils from encapsulated products. No change in peroxidation for Smartfish and placebo product.

Conclusion

Smartfish emulsion enables omega-3 to enter the cell membrane without carrying oxidative products. Omega-3 enters cell membrane in fresh condition. The data h6ly suggest that Smartfish-juice seems to offer a greater protection against lipid peroxidation than other suppliers of marine oil products. The Cell Trial is a pilot-study for the comprehensive Oslo Trial, and hypothesis was confirmed.

The Munich Trial

Finalised in September 2009

Title

Influence of Smartfish on the Omega-3 Index in patients atherosclerosis. Randomised, placebo controlled mono-center comparison of two matching convenience drinks.

Test Facility

Preventive Cardiology, Medizinische Klinik und Poliklinik Innenstadt University Munich.

Scientist

Prof. Dr. C. von Schacky, FAHA, FESC. Submitted to British Journal of Nutrition for publication.

Results

40 patients with atherosclerosis was given a regular Smartfish drink (200 ml) per day. At the end of the 8 weeks treatment period a mean increase of 55% at the H-S omega 3 index was measured. The H-S omega 3 index suggest that sudden cardio failure mortality rate of persons with index >8% is only 10% of persons having an index score <4%.

Conclusion

“The results showed, that daily intake of a convenience drink supplemented with omega-3 fatty acids lead to a significant increase of the omega-3 index with a high interindividual variability in response. Dose and the preparation used were safe,
well tolerated and highly palatable.”
