Marine oils are notoriously difficult to incorporate into formulations for nutritional purposes since they are highly susceptible to oxidation, or rancidification

Oxidation adversely affects nutritional value, aroma, and taste

The industry has sought to deliver omega-3 products that are unaffected by sensory issues, primarily by way of encapsulation or in the form of premade emulsions and powder

However none of these techniques have to date resulted in solutions containing daily requirements of fresh omega-3

There has been little focus on retaining freshness of the marine oils in finished products (e.g. capsules) and intermediate
ingredient-products (powder, micro-encapsulation)

Smartfish drink production is easily scalable, and only limited modifications to standard high volume production lines are needed.
